Toronto in the rain: an indoor downtown day

For a rainy downtown Toronto day, start at the Royal Ontario Museum, eat lunch inside, then take Line 1 to the Art Gallery of Ontario. Finish with dinner and a browse at the Eaton Centre, or stay at the AGO for a Wednesday or Friday evening.

This is a Tuesday-to-Sunday plan for people who want time inside two museums. It leaves room to sit down and look at things. The walks between stations and doors are outdoors, so bring a raincoat or small umbrella. Keep the Islands, ferry and patios for another day.

10 a.m.: start at ROM on Queen's Park

ROM is at 100 Queen's Park. Its current September calendar lists 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, with the remaining Mondays closed. Admission uses Plan Ahead Pricing, so there is no single adult price to build this day around. ROM hours and ticket information.

Use the Weston Entrance on Queen's Park. The Bloor Street entrance beside the Crystal is closed during construction. Museum Station serves ROM on Line 1; there is a street walk between the station and museum, not an indoor connecting tunnel. ROM arrival directions.

Give the morning to the museum. Choose a few galleries that interest you rather than trying to clear the whole building before lunch. A second museum is coming after the break.

12:15 p.m.: lunch without leaving ROM

Go to Druxy's ROM Café on Level 1B. Its published lunch hours for this route's Tuesday-to-Sunday days are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eating here keeps the break indoors and avoids spending it walking to a restaurant and back. ROM dining information.

Allow a proper sit-down break before leaving. The AGO afternoon is more enjoyable when lunch has happened before you reach Dundas Street West.

1 p.m.: take Line 1 to St Patrick

Walk back to Museum Station and take the southbound Line 1 train towards Finch via Union. Get off at St Patrick. From University Avenue, walk west along Dundas Street West to the AGO at 317 Dundas Street West; AGO puts St Patrick Station three blocks east of its main entrance. The adult TTC fare is CA$3.30 by PRESTO or accepted bank-card/mobile-wallet tap, or CA$3.35 cash. Transfers within two hours of the first tap use the same card or device; cash fares do not get that window. Children 12 and under ride free. TTC fares.

That buys the ride between museums. It does not buy the whole day. A morning arrival tap will have expired after a leisurely ROM visit and lunch; an evening ride after several hours at AGO is another fare. The downtown one-fare guide explains the clock with a worked example.

1:30 p.m.: settle into the AGO

Spend the afternoon at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Adult single-day admission, for ages 18 and up, is CA$30. Ontarians under 25 qualify for free admission; that is a residency offer, not a blanket free ticket for all young visitors. AGO admission.

The regular closing time is 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 9 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. Thursday, September 24, 2026 is an exception: AGO closes at 4 p.m. AGO opening hours and early closure.

On Wednesday or Friday, use those later hours to slow down. You already have an indoor evening without crossing downtown to buy another attraction ticket.

Evening: dinner and a browse at Eaton Centre

After AGO, make CF Toronto Eaton Centre the easy finish: indoor food choices, then a browse. Eaton Centre hours and food court and restaurants.

For less time in the rain, retrace Dundas Street West to St Patrick. Board the southbound Line 1 train towards Finch via Union, stay aboard around Union, and get off at Queen Station, which connects to the Eaton Centre. It is a roundabout ride across the core, but it trades street walking for time on a train. St Patrick Station and Queen's Eaton Centre connection.

On a Sunday or after a late AGO night, check the centre's closing time before you plan dinner there.

Why not spend the day in the PATH?

Because the PATH is a collection of links through separately controlled properties. The City says about 35 corporations are involved; there is no single opening-hours table for the network. Monday, a smaller budget, or museum fatigue?

Do not run this pair on a Monday. AGO is closed, and ROM's September calendar also closes the remaining Mondays. The Ontario Science Centre at Harbourfront Centre and St Lawrence South Market are Monday closures too, so neither rescues this particular route. Science Centre schedule and market hours.

For a separate free indoor stop, Allan Gardens Conservatory offers greenhouses, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:45 p.m. It is a change of plan east of the museum route, not an extra stop to squeeze between ROM and AGO. If two museums are too much, choose Ripley's Aquarium at 288 Bremner Boulevard as a separate indoor anchor. On a wet day, use a timed ticket rather than relying on a walk-up purchase. Ripley's says timed tickets bypass the ticket-purchasing line, but arriving before your slot means waiting for it to open. A ticket is not permission to enter early. A downtown base near Line 1

A base near the subway keeps a rain day to short hops. StayToronto's downtown stays include York at 12 and 14 York Street, near Union Station and the PATH; the useful connection for this day is Union's Line 1 service.

Before you go

• Check the dated ROM and AGO calendars, plus same-day TTC service and elevator notices. Museum Station is currently not step-free; ROM directs elevator users to St George Station's Bedford Road exit instead. Follow current Museum Station entrance signs during construction. ROM access directions.
• Reserve museum admission before setting out on a rainy weekend, and allow time for entry lines. No reliable rain-day wait time is published. AGO's free first-Wednesday window is 6 to 9 p.m.; other Wednesday evenings are not automatically free. AGO free-night details.
• Check Ripley's date-specific hours if choosing that alternative, and the dinner venue's own closing time at Eaton Centre.
