To get from Billy Bishop Airport to downtown Toronto, cross to the mainland, then choose the free shuttle to Front and York, an approximately 15-minute ride, or the 509 streetcar to Union, which the airport puts at under 15 minutes for a CA$3.30 adult tap fare. Walking from the mainland pavilion to Union's Front Street entrance is a third option: free, with a mapped estimate of 2.45 km and 33 minutes.

Those are mainland journeys. The tunnel or ferry comes first; neither a shuttle ride nor a streetcar time includes getting off the plane, collecting bags or crossing the channel. Sources: the airport's shuttle and public transit pages, and the TTC's adult fares.

Which route fits your bags and your address?

With a carry-on and a waterfront address west of Yonge Street, I would take the tunnel and the 509. With big bags and a stay near Union, I would use the free shuttle. An address in CityPlace changes the decision again: walking north can save a trip east to Union and back.

  • Carry-on; staying along Queens Quay west of Yonge: Walk to Bathurst and Queens Quay, then take the eastbound 509. About four minutes to the stop; airport estimates under 15 minutes riding to Union, plus waiting. Adult tap CA$3.30.
  • Large bags; staying near Union or Front and York: Airport shuttle. Roughly 15-minute ride, plus waiting. Free.
  • Light bag; staying at 21 Iceboat Terrace in CityPlace: Walk directly north. Mapped estimate about 0.9 km and 12 minutes to the frontage. Free.
  • Light bag; deliberately walking to Union: Walk to the Front Street entrance. Mapped estimate about 2.45 km and 33 minutes. Free.
  • Heavy luggage, a group or a late departure from the airport: Taxi or app ride to your actual address. Paid; journey time depends on the destination and traffic.

The walking figures start at the mainland pavilion, 2 Eireann Quay. They are OpenStreetMap pedestrian-route estimates, not timed walks or luggage allowances.

First, the tunnel or the ferry

Billy Bishop sits across the Western Channel. The pedestrian tunnel is 853 ft long, with four moving walkways. Follow the mainland signs after collecting your bags.

The airport advertises “less than six minutes from curb to check-in.” That describes the departure-direction crossing, not your time from aircraft seat to a downtown pavement. The mainland end has six elevators; the island end has two, alongside the escalator and stairs.

The Marilyn Bell ferry is free for pedestrians. Its crossing takes about 90 seconds, with departures roughly every 15 minutes. That short sailing still has a wait attached; I would use the tunnel when ready to leave, and the ferry when the crossing itself is part of the pleasure.

Where does the free shuttle leave you?

Board outside the mainland pavilion at 2 Eireann Quay. The downtown stop is 44 York Street, on the west side of the Fairmont Royal York at Front and York, across the street from Union Station. It is a hotel-side street stop, not a bus bay inside Union.

The airport lists departures about every 15 minutes and a ride of about 15 minutes. In its reduced early-morning and late-evening windows, the interval is 25 minutes. Saturday evening's reduced window is 8:45 to 10:30 p.m.; do not plan around a daily 12:15 a.m. finish.

Skip a taxi to Front and York in rush hour just to make this transfer. The shuttle goes to that corner for free. A taxi earns its place when it takes your bags all the way to a different door.

Which streetcar goes downtown?

From the pavilion, walk along Eireann Quay to Bathurst Street and Queens Quay West. The mapped walk to the eastbound stop is about 0.3 km, or four minutes. Board the 509 Harbourfront marked Union Station; the airport estimates the ride from here at under 15 minutes. Official airport directions.

For Bathurst Station on Line 2, continue to Fleet Street at Bathurst Street and take the 511 Bathurst northbound. Union is not the necessary first stop for every Toronto address.

The adult TTC fare is CA$3.30 with PRESTO, debit or credit, including a two-hour transfer, or CA$3.35 cash without that two-hour benefit; the one-fare guide covers transfers and the fare cap.

Can you walk straight to CityPlace?

For 21 Iceboat Terrace, the mapped route follows Eireann Quay, Queens Quay West, Dan Leckie Way and Iceboat Terrace. It comes to about 0.9 km and 12 minutes from the mainland pavilion to the building frontage. That is a different proposition from the 33-minute walk to Union's Front Street entrance.

This is where Parade's CityPlace location helps a Billy Bishop arrival. Travel light and head towards the neighbourhood instead of going to Union first. The trade-off is an outdoor walk with your bags; the estimate ends at the frontage, not at your booked suite door.

Taxis, app rides and access needs

The taxi corral is to the right of the mainland pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay. For Uber or Lyft, the airport now directs passengers to the curb beside Little Norway Park in the Finger lanes, in the lane closest to the curb.

The tunnel-and-streetcar recommendation does not suit someone who needs a verified step-free itinerary or is relying on a streetcar overnight. Billy Bishop's accessibility page confirms elevators for the tunnel and a shuttle with a ramp and wheelchair space; those facilities do not establish today's lift status or every part of your onward route.

Overnight Bathurst service is the 307 bus. Treat that as a separate journey plan, not an all-night version of the 509.

Flying back to the US from Billy Bishop

US preclearance opened on 10 March 2026. US-bound passengers complete that processing before departure; the airport lists a first-year CA$22.50 CBP user fee, collected with the airline ticket, with some exceptions. This does not change your arrival route into Toronto.

Before you go

  • Check ttc.ca service advisories; both routes have had several temporary bus replacements in 2026.
  • Late-night shuttle service is reduced; check the live tracker. Shuttle ride times depend on traffic and road conditions.
  • The airport lists 5:15 a.m. as the first mainland ferry crossing and 12:07 a.m. as the last island departure, but calls the schedule a guide only; weather and capacity affect crossings.
  • For a step-free trip, confirm current elevator access and the onward route; the airport recommends arranging airline assistance at least 48 hours before travel.
  • Add time to the mapped walks for signals, luggage, weather, your pace and building access. They exclude the island crossing and elevator waits.

The airport advertises less than six minutes from mainland curb to check-in through its 853-ft tunnel. That is a crossing estimate, not a guarantee from your aircraft to the street after arrival.

Which streetcar goes from Billy Bishop to Union Station?

Take the eastbound 509 Harbourfront from Bathurst and Queens Quay West. The mapped walk from the mainland pavilion is about four minutes, followed by an airport-estimated ride of under 15 minutes plus waiting. The adult tap fare is CA$3.30.
