For the Toronto Waterfront Marathon 2026 on October 17 and 18, choose your stay around your race's start and leave the car parked. Sunday runners start at Yonge and Gerrard; supporters heading to the Bay Street finish need to plan their crossing before the pedestrian restrictions begin at 9 a.m. Official race details and weekend access information.

For a Sunday runner, prioritise a short walk to Yonge and Gerrard over a waterfront address. The waterfront is part of the course, but the start is inland. This plan does not suit someone who needs to drive right up to the start or wants to follow a runner by car.

Which start line do you need?

The 5K and Sunday's longer races use different starts. All three finish on Bay Street just north of Queen Street, beside Nathan Phillips Square.

  • 5K. Date and start time: Saturday, October 17, 9 a.m.; Start line: Bay Street just north of Front Street, facing south.
  • Marathon and half marathon. Date and start time: Sunday, October 18, 8 a.m.; Start line: Yonge Street just north of Gerrard Street, facing north.
  • Marathon wheelchair start. Date and start time: Sunday, October 18, 7:57 a.m.; Start line: The same Yonge Street start.

Nathan Phillips Square is Race Central. The organiser's Sunday schedule lists the half-marathon course closing at 1 p.m., then the marathon finish and Race Central closing at 3:30 p.m. These are event closing times, not your runner's expected arrival. Official event information and Sunday schedule.

Save two separate pins: your start and Nathan Phillips Square. Sending everyone to City Hall first adds another journey for the runner starting up at Gerrard.

Pick up the bib at Exhibition Place before race day

The expo and kit pickup are at Better Living Centre, 195 Princes' Boulevard, in Exhibition Place. Expo admission is free; participating in a race requires registration. Official expo information.

  • Friday, October 16. Open: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Last admission: 7:30 p.m.; Who can collect: 5K, marathon and half-marathon participants.
  • Saturday, October 17. Open: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Last admission: 5:30 p.m.; Who can collect: Marathon and half-marathon participants only.

5K runners must collect on Friday. There is no Saturday race-day pickup for the 5K. Put the expo into the arrival-day plan before arranging dinner or a late arrival downtown. Official kit-pickup rules.

Which road closures affect a downtown stay?

The closures start before Sunday. These selected rows come from the organiser's 2026 event notice, page 2, checked October 2. All times below are Toronto local time; reopening times are the published schedule.

  • Bay St, Dundas St W to Queen St W, full road. Closure starts: Fri Oct 16, 10 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 9 p.m.
  • Bay St, Queen St W to Front St, full road. Closure starts: Sat Oct 17, 4 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sat Oct 17, 1 p.m.
  • Lake Shore Blvd, Yonge St to Bathurst St, full road. Closure starts: Sat Oct 17, 8 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sat Oct 17, 11 a.m.
  • Yonge St, Carlton St to Gerrard St, full road. Closure starts: Sat Oct 17, 7 p.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 11 a.m.
  • Yonge St, Gerrard to Richmond St, full road. Closure starts: Sun Oct 18, 3 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 11 a.m.
  • Bay St, Queen St W to Lake Shore Blvd W, full road. Closure starts: Sun Oct 18, 5 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 5 p.m.
  • Lake Shore Blvd W, Windermere Ave to Bathurst St, full road. Closure starts: Sun Oct 18, 5 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 2 p.m.
  • Lake Shore Blvd W, Bathurst St to Yonge St, westbound. Closure starts: Sun Oct 18, 5 a.m.; Scheduled reopening: Sun Oct 18, 2 p.m.

That is a selection, not the whole closure network. The organiser's racePoint map has a closure layer and time slider for reading the rest of the route.

Skip the race-morning drive into the start area. A parking reservation does not make the closed approach to a garage usable. The same applies to a taxi drop-off: put the last stretch on foot into the plan.

The Bay Street crossing matters as much as the finish pin

From 9 a.m. on Sunday, Bay Street closes to east-west pedestrian crossing between Lake Shore Boulevard and Dundas Street. The organiser directs spectators to cross at Dundas or use the pedestrian bridge just south of Front Street inside Union Station. Official spectator access directions.

Nathan Phillips Square is on the west side of Bay. Pantages and Jarvis are east of it. For supporters coming from those stays after 9 a.m., use the Dundas crossing in the meeting plan instead of drawing a straight line across Bay at Queen. A short map distance to City Hall does not settle the route through the race barriers.

Agree on one meeting point in Race Central before separating. Send each other a photograph of the chosen spot when you arrive. “At the finish” leaves too much to sort out while one person is still moving through the finish area.

Where should you watch?

The official marathon and half-marathon map shows both races heading north on Yonge, west on Bloor and south on Bathurst before reaching Lake Shore Boulevard West. Its eye symbols mark recommended viewing areas; stars mark cheer sites.

  • Bathurst Street near Queen Street West: an early city-course option, with a viewing-area marker on the official map. Choose this for a cheer before the runners reach the lake.
  • Lake Shore Boulevard West by Sunnyside: the map marks waterfront viewing areas around the western out-and-back stretch. This is a course-watching outing in its own right. Do not build the morning around also racing your runner back to City Hall.
  • Bay Street near the finish: choose the finish area if the reunion matters more than seeing several parts of the course. Settle the east-west crossing first.

The half marathon turns toward the finish while the full marathon continues east. Do not send a half-marathon supporter to The Beaches. That eastern section belongs to the marathon route.

Can you take the TTC to the 8 a.m. start?

Walk from your downtown base for Sunday's start. The TTC describes normal Sunday subway service as beginning at approximately 8 a.m., the same time as the race gun. A location “near Line 1” does not solve that timing problem. TTC service information.

Do not use the 320 Yonge as the race-morning backup. The TTC's marathon diversion page, checked October 2, still describes Sunday, October 19, 2025: 97C/320 Yonge and the Queen, King, Dundas, Carlton, Harbourfront and Bathurst streetcars were diverted. That is last year's record, not a 2026 route plan. This year's road-closure notice closes Yonge from Gerrard to Richmond at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

For later trips, an adult pays CA$3.30 with PRESTO, debit or credit. Tapping the same card or device gives a two-hour transfer window. Each rider aged 13 or older needs their own payment method. TTC fares.

Where to stay: compare the start walk and the finish walk

These are Google Maps walking distances read on October 2, using the named street address and the destination pin. The start column ends at Yonge and Gerrard; the finish-area column ends at Nathan Phillips Square, not the finish chute.

York makes more sense for Saturday's 5K than that Sunday column suggests: 12 York is 800 m on the map to Bay and Front, the intersection below the 5K start. That is a different decision from sleeping near Yonge and Gerrard.

For the waterfront course, Parade's 15 Iceboat Terrace address in CityPlace is 700 m on the map to Bathurst and Lake Shore Boulevard West, via Dan Leckie Way. The official course map confirms that waterfront stretch. Choose it for that connection, not as a Sunday start-line stay.

Our own addresses serve different parts of this weekend. Use the actual building address in the comparison, not just “downtown” or “waterfront”. The table measures 210 Victoria and 12 York specifically; it does not substitute those distances for the other addresses listed under Pantages and York.

Where to eat

Choose the meal around the finish time, not the other way round. These three places come from our downtown eating guide.

For Sunday, October 18, the table uses each venue's published Sunday hours, rechecked October 2. $$ means a casual meal; $$$ means an upscale meal. These are relative price bands.

  • The Senator, 249 Victoria Street. Price band: $$ to $$$; Published Sunday hours: Brunch, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Why it fits: A sit-down brunch near the Yonge-Dundas cluster and the Victoria Street stays. The 2 p.m. close rules it out for a late finish.
  • PAI Northern Thai Kitchen, 18 Duncan Street. Price band: $$; Published Sunday hours: 11:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Why it fits: Curries and noodles west of Nathan Phillips Square, with an afternoon window that works after a later reunion.
  • KINKA Izakaya Original, 398 Church Street. Price band: $$ to $$$; Published Sunday hours: 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; last call 9:30 p.m.; Why it fits: Shared Japanese plates north of the Yonge-Dundas cluster. Make this the dinner after a rest, not the immediate post-finish lunch.

Where the day goes after

Keep the post-race afternoon in Downtown Yonge. The Victoria Street theatre walk from our Pantages area guide passes Massey Hall at 178 Victoria Street and the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre at 244 Victoria Street. Looking at the buildings from the street needs no ticket; attending a performance does.

For a fixed afternoon plan, Mirvish lists Hell's Kitchen at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre; it requires a separate show ticket. Skip the matinee if it puts a deadline on meeting your runner. A Victoria Street stroll, a rest at the suite and KINKA's 5 p.m. opening leave the afternoon flexible.

Before you go

  • The organiser's directions also describe the start area as Yonge between Elm and Queen. Check your corral on the official racePoint map in race week.
  • The walking distances are ordinary map routes, not a race-day access plan. Allow extra distance for barriers, controlled crossings and your assigned entrance.
  • The TTC marathon diversion page still showed 2025 information when checked October 2. Check the TTC marathon diversions page for its 2026 update and your departure before travelling.

From 9 a.m. on October 18, Bay Street closes to east-west pedestrian crossing between Lake Shore Boulevard and Dundas Street. The organiser directs spectators to cross at Dundas or use the pedestrian bridge just south of Front Street inside Union Station.

Can I rely on the subway for the 8 a.m. Sunday start?

No. Normal Sunday subway service begins at approximately 8 a.m., the same time as the marathon and half-marathon start. A walkable downtown base avoids relying on a first train.

Which downtown stay suits a runner on Sunday?

Prioritise the walk to Yonge and Gerrard. The measured Google Maps routes are 600 m from Pantages at 210 Victoria Street, 850 m from 251 Jarvis Street and 2.5 km from 12 York Street. These are ordinary map routes to the intersection, not corral-entry distances. York instead has an 800 m mapped walk to Bay and Front for Saturday's 5K start area.
