Thanksgiving long weekend in Toronto (Oct 10 to 12): what's open and a car-free plan

For Thanksgiving weekend in Toronto, visit St. Lawrence Market on Saturday or Sunday and save the Royal Ontario Museum for Monday, October 12: the market closes that day, but ROM opens from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. TTC runs holiday service on Monday, so this downtown weekend works without a car. Market holiday hours, ROM's October calendar, TTC holiday service.
Do the food shopping first, the waterfront second and the museum last. This plan suits visitors who want a market lunch, a walk beside the lake and one substantial indoor outing. It does not suit a trip built around driving to family gatherings outside Toronto, or anyone looking for three days with very little walking.
What's open and closed over Thanksgiving weekend?
The long weekend runs Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12, 2026. Monday is Thanksgiving Day. Official 2026 holiday dates.
These are date-specific notices for the 2026 weekend, checked on October 1.
- St. Lawrence Market, South Market: Saturday Oct 10: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday Oct 11: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday Oct 12: closed; Put your market meal and shopping before Monday. Official holiday hours
- Royal Ontario Museum, 100 Queen's Park: Oct 10, 11 and 12: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Save ROM for Monday. Its October calendar explicitly makes Thanksgiving an exception to its other Monday closures. October calendar
- Harbourfront Centre main building, 235 Queens Quay West: Closed October 5 to 18 for infrastructure work, covering all three days; Do not use the main building as your waterfront indoor stop. Official closure notice
- LCBO stores: Monday Oct 12: closed; Buy anything you want from an LCBO store before Monday. This row describes LCBO stores, not every alcohol retailer. 2026/27 calendar
- TTC: Monday Oct 12: holiday service; Use the holiday timetable for your route. It is not an ordinary working Monday. 2026 service calendar
Skip the Monday trip to St. Lawrence Market. More usefully, do not treat "closed Mondays" as a rule for every attraction: ROM's dated calendar says the opposite for October 12.
Saturday: St. Lawrence Market and Front Street East
Start with the South Market food hall on Front Street East at Jarvis Street. Across Front Street, the North Market holds the Saturday farmers' market. Its regular Saturday hours are 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the South Market opens at 7 a.m. Pick the building before picking an arrival time. Market locations and hours.
For this weekend, arrive after 9 a.m. That is our suggested start, not another opening time. Eat, browse the food counters and finish any shopping for Sunday's meal. Leave chilled purchases until the end, then return them to your accommodation instead of carrying them around all afternoon.
Keep lunch on Front Street East. C'est What, 67 Front Street East at Church Street, is downstairs and west of the market. The food options below give you a sit-down alternative after browsing. C'est What location.
From Union Station, follow Front Street east to Jarvis. From King Station, walk east on King Street, then south on Jarvis to Front. These are surface routes; there is no need to find an underground passage to the market. The TTC downtown map shows the stations and street connections.
Sunday: Queens Quay, a patio stop and the streetcar
Make Queens Quay West the day's main street. Amsterdam BrewHouse, 245 Queens Quay West, gives you a restaurant stop by the lake; farther west is the Toronto Music Garden, 479 Queens Quay West. Amsterdam BrewHouse, City garden directory.
Skip Harbourfront Centre's main building at 235 Queens Quay West as a warm-up stop. Its October 5 to 18 closure also shuts Boxcar Social and the Ontario Science Centre inside. Use the restaurant for your indoor break. Building closure notice.
Choose one stretch to walk and use transit for the return. This is a walk along the water, not a commitment to visit every attraction on the shore. The waterfront walk is the free part of the day; food, drinks and transit are separate costs.
Amsterdam has waterfront patios. Make lunch the anchor and an outdoor table the bonus. A coat on the back of a chair is a better October plan than a whole afternoon dependent on sitting outside.
The 509 Harbourfront connects Union Station with Queens Quay West and Exhibition Loop. Use it for the waterfront leg; take an eastbound vehicle signed for Union on the return. The September 2026 TTC map is the route reference for this plan.
Monday: ROM, with the correct entrance saved
Head north from Union on Line 1 toward Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to Museum Station for ROM at 100 Queen's Park. The museum's own directions identify Museum Station on Line 1. ROM location and entrances.
Here is the detail to save alongside your ticket: ROM's current visitor directions send you to the Weston Entrance on Queen's Park. They list the Bloor Street entrance as temporarily closed for OpenROM construction. A museum that is open on a holiday can still have a closed entrance. Put the door in your map, not just the museum name.
Book Monday's museum admission through ROM's ticketing link. Prices depend on the date and ticket selection. Keep the afternoon for the galleries you want to see rather than adding another timed attraction across town.
Where should you eat?
These are regular-menu choices, not advertised Thanksgiving set dinners. The bands below use selected dishes on the restaurants' own menus, checked October 1. They cover food only; budget separately for drinks, tax, tip and any music admission.
- C'est What: 67 Front Street East, downstairs at Church. CA$19 to $23 for examples including vegetarian poutine ($19), black garlic burger ($21) and bison burger ($23). Menu; A seated meal on Saturday's market-side stretch, without crossing downtown for lunch.
- Amsterdam BrewHouse: 245 Queens Quay West. CA$22.99 to $34.99 for examples from the one-piece fish and chips ($22.99) to smoked brisket ($34.99). Official food menu; Sunday's waterfront meal, with indoor dining as well as patios.
- The Rex: 194 Queen Street West. CA$15 to $24 across examples from the veggie burger ($15) to steak and fries ($24). Menu; Food and an evening of music at one address. The show costs extra.
There is no need to order turkey to make this a Thanksgiving trip. Choose the meal you want. A burger beside the lake still leaves you the rest of the afternoon.
Where does the evening go after dinner?
For a planned Saturday night, The Rex at 194 Queen Street West lists the Andrew Downing Quintet on October 10, 8 to 10:30 p.m., with a ticket link. Osgoode Station is the named subway stop in the venue's directions. Official show listing.
The Rex separates music admission from food and drink. Buying dinner does not pay for the performance. Choose this for a listening evening; skip it if you want an uninterrupted conversation over a quiet meal. Venue admission policy.
How does TTC work on Thanksgiving Monday?
The TTC's 2026 holiday-service page lists October 12 as holiday service: Sunday schedules with an earlier start, at approximately 6 a.m. This is the TTC's general holiday-service description. TTC holiday service.
For an adult, tapping a debit or credit card costs CA$3.30 and starts a two-hour TTC transfer window. Keep tapping the same card or device. Each traveller aged 13 or older needs their own payment method; cash does not include the two-hour transfer benefit. You do not need to buy a PRESTO card for these ordinary adult rides. TTC fares and transfer rules.
Leave the car parked for this itinerary. Front Street, Queens Quay and Queen's Park form three separate outings, not three places to move a rental car between. Use the subway for ROM and the streetcar for the waterfront.

Where should you stay for this Toronto weekend?
Start with access to Line 1, then compare the trip to Front Street East and Queens Quay West. South Core puts you on the Union and waterfront side of this plan; the trade-off is travelling north for ROM. A Bloor Street base reverses that choice.
On StayToronto's short-stay list, York is at 12 and 14 York Street; Jarvis is at 251 Jarvis Street. Those are different starting points for this weekend.
Google Maps walking routes, checked October 1, 2026:
- York, 12 York Street: walk to St. Lawrence Market 1.5 km; walk to Union Station 450 m
- York, 14 York Street: walk to St. Lawrence Market 1.4 km; walk to Union Station 350 m
- Jarvis, 251 Jarvis Street: walk to St. Lawrence Market 1.0 km; walk to Union Station 1.6 km
"Downtown" alone does not tell you which morning will be easiest, including with us. Map the actual address to the market, the waterfront and ROM before choosing.
For a CityPlace base, compare Parade's short stays and read the CityPlace neighbourhood guide.
