National Bank Open Toronto 2026: transit, weather and where to stay

The National Bank Open runs August 1 to 13, 2026 at Sobeys Stadium, 1 Shoreham Drive, on the York University campus. Toronto has the women’s draw this year, and you get there on Line 1 northbound to Pioneer Village, not by car.

The National Bank Open is the kind of Toronto event that can fill a whole day without warning. A short afternoon session becomes dinner on the concourse, another match and a late subway ride home. Plan the return before the first serve.

The draw takes place Friday, July 31, and the tournament says the first detailed match schedules will be posted later that evening.

That last point matters. Do not build the trip around a guessed player time. Tennis matches have no fixed length, and the daily order can move with weather and earlier results. Buy the session that works for your trip, then check the official schedule the night before and again in the morning. The daily order of play is not published until after the Friday draw, so there is no fixed start time to plan around until then.

Take Line 1 to Pioneer Village

The tournament calls the TTC the easiest and most efficient way to reach Sobeys Stadium for most visitors. Take Line 1 northbound toward Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and exit at Pioneer Village Station. The stadium is about an eight-minute walk from the station. Bus routes 106, 108 and 960 also stop near the site.

StayToronto’s South Core and Entertainment District addresses make that trip unusually simple:

• From the York suites at 12 and 14 York Street, walk to Union Station and stay on the west branch of Line 1 to Pioneer Village.
• From Atmos at 300 Front Street West or 20 John Street, use St Andrew or Union and take Line 1 northbound toward Vaughan.
• From Parade in CityPlace, take the 510 Spadina streetcar to Spadina Station, then join Line 1 northbound.
• From Jarvis at 251 Jarvis Street, the nearest subway stations feed the Yonge side of Line 1, so the trip needs a transfer.

The route is long enough that a bathroom break and a full phone battery are worth planning. Paid parking is $7 a day and the Pioneer Village lot has 1,881 spaces. Lots A, B, F and V need a pass, and taxi or Uber pick-up is the roundabout on Arboretum Lane northeast of the stadium. Take the subway anyway.

Saturday, August 1 is also the Caribana Grand Parade at Exhibition Place, from 10:00 to 20:00, and day two of VELD at Downsview Park. All three events pull on the TTC that day.

Bring less, but bring the right things

Sobeys Stadium is outdoors. Mobile tickets are used at entry, so charge your phone and carry a portable battery if you will be out all day.

A small snack is allowed. You may bring an empty reusable plastic or metal water bottle, or a sealed bottle of water. Refill stations are available on site. Alcohol is not permitted, and bags are inspected at entry.

A poncho or light rain jacket is more useful than a complicated umbrella plan. The National Bank Open tells ticket holders to come to the stadium even when rain is forecast. Tickets are non-refundable. If a session is interrupted by weather before the end of the first match or before 90 minutes of play, the ticketing team contacts session ticket holders with credit options valid this year or next.

Which downtown base fits a tennis trip?

York for the cleanest route

York is steps from Union Station in the Financial District and South Core. That gives you one Line 1 ride to Pioneer Village and a direct UP Express connection if you arrive through Pearson Airport. The collection includes studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom layouts, which is useful when family or friends are travelling together.

Atmos for tennis plus an evening downtown

Atmos keeps St Andrew Station close while putting you near King Street West, the CN Tower and the Entertainment District. It suits a trip where the tennis is the main event, not the only event.

Parade for a group that wants waterfront breathing room

Parade places you around CityPlace and Canoe Landing Park. The ride to tennis includes the Spadina connection, but the full kitchen, laundry and living space can make a multi-day tournament stay feel less like camping in a hotel room.

Jarvis for guests combining tennis with Downtown East

Jarvis works better for travellers who also want the Eaton Centre, Toronto Metropolitan University or Downtown East. It is not the simplest tennis commute, and saying that plainly helps guests choose the right base.

Where to eat before or after the match

• PAI Northern Thai Kitchen, 18 Duncan Street. $$ Current mains run about $22 to $27. It is the useful choice near St Andrew when an Atmos stay and a proper meal matter more than eating at the stadium.
• JOEY King Street, 20 King Street West. $$ to $$$ Current mains run from $26.50 to $40. It is a sit-down option close to Union after the southbound ride.
• Richmond Station, 1 Richmond Street West. $$$ Current dinner mains run from $35 to $47, with service included in the posted prices. Pick this for a planned dinner rather than a quick bite before the train.

Where the night goes, and the last train

Back downtown, King Street West and the Entertainment District are the late option. Harbourfront is the quieter one. These areas do not need a tournament ticket; a separate concert, theatre performance or club event does.

Line 1 runs late, but the last southbound train from Pioneer Village leaves earlier than most people expect, and the final departure does not always run the full line. Check the TTC trip planner for your date before you leave the stadium, not after the session ends.

Build the day around the session

For a day session, eat breakfast in the suite and leave a cushion for the station walk, ticket scan and bag check. If you are attending at night, make lunch the main meal. A full kitchen lets you avoid spending the afternoon trying to find a table near the stadium.

After the session, the downtown advantage becomes clear. Line 1 brings you back to Union or St Andrew, where dinner, the waterfront and your suite are close together. Wet clothes can go into the washer. Leftovers can go into a real fridge. Everyone can stop sitting on the same hotel bed.

If you are attending more than one day, do not overbook the mornings. Tennis schedules shift, late matches happen and Toronto in August can be hot. One good plan per half-day is enough.
